What the Hell was the first track that we've heard from Avril's 2011 album entitled Goodbye Lullaby. The single was put online on January 11th 2011.
The song starts up with a smooth and sexy keyboard riff before Avril starts singing with the sentence You say I'm messing with your head meanwhile a bevy of cheerleaders add texture with yeah, yeahs. The record starts to get catchy during the pre-chorus and then violently switches into the chorus that has more hooks than a coat rack. The two part chorus showcases correspondingly catchy vocal melodies, but then heads back into the cheerleaderish verse with even more yeah, yeahs. Avril apparently needs her cheerleader backups, reminiscent of her Girlfriend record from a few years back.
'All I want is to mess around,' the message of the song gets right to the point. Avril could really not care any less, about anything at all. She doesn't care 'if you mess around, if you love me, if you hate me.' Avril's entire philosophy on life is what the hell for Avril. I can't blame her for having this viewpoint. You know you've always wanted to just let things go and say "f" it, or what the hell? I know I have, and this song lets me do it with ease.
About 2:30 minutes into the track comes the bridge which features a lot of woahs and Avril telling someone special that messing with your head. Whatever that means. The release then kind of obviously leads back into the chorus for an additional two trips around the hook.
All in all, its a great recording. The pre-teens will giggle with glee at the rebellion in the song and maybe kids up to college aged will enjoy the beat and the sugary goodness of the melodies.
Enjoy this song and watch out for the full album in March of 2011 called Avril Lavigne Goodbye Lullaby. After hearing this first song, it should be amazing.
